Confidentiality

Confidentiality must be maintained when obtaining patient data, especially follow-up information. Confidentiality policies and procedures approved by the cancer committee and/or governing body, including a procedure for both written and verbal contacts, must be part of the cancer registry’s documentation. These policies and procedures must be in compliance with federal laws, state laws, and hospital policy.

The National Cancers Registrars Association's Code of Ethics [PDF - 127 KB] also addresses the issues of confidentiality and staff conduct.
