Here is what we have learned from this unit:
- Lung cancer is the second most common cancer, accounting for about
one out of five malignancies in men and one out of nine in women.
- Over the past several years, while the incidence of lung cancer has
gradually declined in men, it has been rising alarmingly in women.
- There are two major types of lung cancer: small cell lung cancer (SCLC)
and non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC).
- The following people are at risk of lung cancer:
- Men between 60 and 65 and women about 70 are at greater risk
of having lung cancer.
- People who smoke.
- Those exposed to smoke in the environment.
- Those exposed to asbestos and other industrial and atmospheric
pollutants.
- Signs and symptoms include: coughing, breathing difficulty, recurring
pneumonia or bronchitis, chest, shoulder, or arm pain, weight loss, bone
pain, swelling of the face or neck, fatigue.
- Host factors which contribute to better survivals include good performance
status, female gender, and age at diagnosis over 70 years. Prognosis
is also based on clinical stage and cell type.
