Unit Review

What makes the new SEER Summary Staging Manual - 2000 (SSSM2K) a true manual is that it offers instructions, definitions, and detailed descriptions. Further, the actual standard NAACCR stage codes are provided (unlike the old Summary Staging Guide -1977 (SSG77)). In addition, there are other major changes:

  • The new manual contains the site codes that are listed in ICD-O-2/3.
  • Every primary site now has a scheme in SSSM2K - amajor improvement over the old SSG77.
  • The European Eponymic Standard was adopted in the new SSSM2K.
  • New "time rule."

The new content of the SSSM2K may change the stage from what it would have been using the old SSG77. Notations used in the new SSSM2K denote those changes. Users of the new SSSM2K are encouraged to read the introductory pages of the manual PRIOR to attempting to stage a case.

Hands-on Exercises

A set of hands-on exercises have been created to give you an opportunity to reinforce what you have learned.

There are six real world cancer cases. Based on the information presented to you in these cases, you will be asked to provide information on primary site text, site code, morphology text, morphology code, summary stage 1977 text, and the SEER Summary Staging Manual-2000 code.

Wherever a code is required in the exercise, the answer is definite and a correct answer is expected. In this case, you are limited to three tries to answer the question correctly. After failing three times, the standard answer will be presented to you and the interaction will be terminated.
