Every registry should develop and maintain a policy and procedure
manual that documents each phase of cancer registry operations.
This manual promotes smooth operation of the registry and
serves as a training reference for new staff. A complete and
current procedure manual can help registry staff identify
changes in the profession. Table
B contains a list of items that should be included in
a registry's policy and procedure manual.
In addition to a a policy and procedure manual, computerized
registries must also maintain an operations manual that addresses
the items listed in Table
C.

The cancer committee or registry's governing
body should be involved with the development of the
policy and procedure manual. Once developed it should
be reviewed and revised at least once a year. The procedure
manual must be updated as procedures change to maintain
current documentation.
